Shane and Cheryl stood at the counter waiting for the store clerk to return from helping another customer.
Cheryl could see the car from inside the store. The sky was overcast the sun hadn’t appeared in the sky today. The clouds were low and gathering as if a storm was brewing.
The clerk appeared from the storeroom. Shane called Cheryl from her daydream “Honey, would you like two pieces of haddock?” Shane asked. “Hmm, one sweetie and one Salmon steak” Cheryl replied as she broke her focus.
She turned toward the counter and smiled at her fiancé. she then looked at the fresh fish on display. Shane sighs impatience and begins to tap his fingers on the countertop.
They had a few more to make before they headed home. Shane wanted to get his errands completed and enjoy the rest of their weekend. It was the start of their vacation and he wanted to start the drive out of town first thing Sunday morning.
Another customer comes into the store behind them. Before Cheryl could turn to look behind her, the store clerk apologized for the wait. “Yes, can I get one haddock and one salmon steak? Do you have any calamari?” Shane asked. Before the clerk can respond, the glass shatters behind Cheryl and the store is riddled with tiny explosions.
She covers her head and screams for Shane. “Shane! Shane!” Cheryl sobs and screams. All she sees is darkness. All she can hear is the deafening silence. The shrill of tires and the smell of burning rubber stench in the air. The sound of crunching glass underneath his boots, Cheryl covered in glass and debris. She was lifted out and into his arms. “Shane, I can’t see anything. Where are you? Are you ok?” Cheryl pleaded. No response. “As soon as I heard the noise, I was scared. Shane did you see what happened? where is everyone babe?” Cheryl paused, and her body froze. She began to process what was happening. “Who are you? Where is Shane? Help!” Tears began to stream down her face.
She tried to keep track of where she was or where she was going to end up. All she could think was if she was going to die and her fiance was nowhere to be found.
Thump, clunk, darkness. Cheryl was in a trunk. She wasn’t very spiritual but she pray and cried to be saved.
He felt as if he was hit by a tonne of bricks. He couldn't feel his legs and felt cold. As he tried to focus the room looked different. He tried to clear his throat but it was dry and hoarse. Shane fainted and by the looks of it, he was shot. He felt this burning aggravating sensation in his legs growing outward from where the bullets travelled. Shane lay there fading in and out of consciousness. As he sat there deflated he was thinking “this is it. I am about to die, have I done everything I'm supposed to do? Am I going to die?” Shane muttered to himself. Shane was a CYW - a child and youth worker. He worked with at-risk youth. He didn’t get to marry his love, Cheryl. As his mind crossed Cheryl he began to panic and his heart sank. “I’m not ready, Cheryl” Shane cried “I love you Cheryl” Shane reached out and heard the loud cry of the sirens. Shane fainted.
“YOUR GOING TO BE OK SIR” the police and ambulance lifted him onto the stretcher. “Cheryl!” Shane dropped in and out of consciousness. “He’s losing too much blood!” Yelled the paramedic.
